Geography 1100 Introduction to Environmental Studies and Sustainability Geography 3100 Environment/Resources/Sustainability
Through GEOG 1100 and GEOG 3100, I not only ignited my passion for environmental sustainability but also acquired indispensable tools and knowledge to actively pursue it. I gained an in-depth understanding of sustainability issues through numerous case studies and action plans, preparing me to teach this knowledge effectively in the future. One concrete way I plan to integrate environmental sustainability into my classroom is by installing a vertical farm. A vertical farm will provide my students with the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of sustainable practices and will also give them a chance to explore sustainable solutions through hands-on learning. Additionally, I will implement various action plans and projects to actively involve my students, take them outdoors frequently to foster a connection with the land in order to care for it, and introduce recycling programs and sustainable energy initiatives, such as solar panels, inspired by GEOG 3100. Ultimately, both of these courses have equipped me with the tools and knowledge that I will use to teach my students about environmental sustainability, as students are a crucial demographic to target with climate change education and action.
Philosophy 1110 Introduction to Critical Thinking and Philosophy 3600 Knowledge, Power & Credibility
Through Philosophy 1110, I was able to develop skills that will be essential for me as a teacher, by fostering critical reflection and understanding the importance of critical thinking in problem solving and decision making. I believe that by having this understanding, I can engage my future students in meaningful conversations about environmental sustainability and climate change. Throughout the course, there was a strong emphasis on the role of words in both arguments and thought processes, as well as the importance of teaching students how to think critically. This will benefit me as a teacher because I will be able to help students understand the complexities of environmental issues, as well as provide them with the skills and knowledge to make informed and responsible decisions. Additionally, I will be able to equip them with the skills to lead positive change in their communities.
My understanding of knowledge and credibility within philosophical discourse was further enhanced by Philosophy 3600. This course explored topics such as renowned philosophers’ perspectives on questions related to the nature and sources of knowledge. I wrote a paper based on Locke’s theory of ideas, focusing on experiential learning, which I resonate deeply with, reinforcing the significance of hands-on learning in education. This course taught me the importance of critically examining different perspectives, and of being open to new ideas and concepts. It also taught me the importance of questioning my own beliefs, and expanding my understanding of philosophical thought. As a teacher I will strive to foster the same critical thinking and open-mindedness in my students, allowing them to explore their own ideas and challenge their own assumptions. I will also encourage them to question their own beliefs and be curious and open-minded about the world around them.
